World-leading chemicals manufacturer Eternis starts collaboration with EnginZyme

Eternis is a global manufacturer of flavour and fragrance compounds, and its products can be found in many of the leading perfume brands today. The company was seeking creative solutions to reduce the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions generated by its current processes. In order to meet this challenge, Eternis posted the opportunity on PITCCH, the European business paradigm that promotes collaboration in advanced technologies, looking for SMEs or startups that could crack this challenge.

With the proposed solution through innovative enzymatic biomanufacturing, EnginZyme was named the challenge winner. Through the application of EnginZyme’s biocatalyst and process development capabilities, the target solution seeks to generate multiple benefits

  • A higher process yield, resulting in improved raw material efficiency and reduced by-product formation
  • Lower energy consumption and reduced CO2 emissions, leading to reduced exposure to the volatility of energy markets
  • Replacement of a metal catalyst by an innocuous enzyme-based biocatalyst

Andrew Burke, Procurement and Sustainability Manager at Eternis: “Eternis are excited to collaborate with EnginZyme on innovative biomanufacturing solutions. Through this partnership, we aim to reduce the overall environmental impact of our processes and the products we produce.”

Jordi López Launes, Director of Business Development at EnginZyme: “We are thrilled about being picked to help Eternis rethink manufacturing processes to make more sustainable and efficient chemicals. It truly was a great pleasure to participate in the PITCCH challenge, have the opportunity to connect with Eternis, and finally share our joint purpose of making the chemical industry greener.”

With this target solution in mind, Eternis and EnginZyme have started to collaborate on the definition of a new biomanufacturing process in the field of aromas within the six months framework provided by PITCCH. After this period, both companies will determine the next steps towards piloting and industrial implementation of a novel biomanufacturing process.
